Furnaces
Gas, propane or oil-fired forced-air heating.
Buyer's guide: Furnaces: staging is the specification that matters, not AFUEWe hold full sourced data on 10 furnaces, each with a specification traced to its source and cross-checked against owner reports.

Sorted by data completeness.
Amana AMVM97AMVM970803BN
97-98% AFUE (varies by capacity size) self-calibrating modulating condensing furnace with a variable-speed ECM blower and ComfortBridge communicating-capable controls.
Bryant Evolution 987M987MC42080C17
Up to 98.3% AFUE modulating condensing furnace with a variable-speed constant-airflow ECM blower -- Carrier's sibling-brand equivalent of the Infinity 98 platform.
Carrier Infinity 9859MN7
98.5% AFUE modulating condensing gas furnace with a variable-speed blower.
Owners: 1 watch-out 2 reports →Lennox EL296VEL296DF110XE60C
96% AFUE two-stage condensing furnace with a variable-speed ECM blower, Lennox's mid-tier Elite line rather than the flagship Signature Collection.
Rheem Endeavor R962VR962V1005A21M4SCAP
96% AFUE two-stage condensing furnace with a PWM-controlled constant-CFM ECM blower Rheem markets as 'truly variable speed technology' even though the gas valve itself is two-stage, not modulating.
Trane XR80TDD1C100A9481B
80% AFUE single-stage non-condensing furnace with a standard (non-ECM) nine-tap blower motor -- the budget/legacy end of this catalog, included deliberately for AFUE and price contrast against the 95%+ condensing units that otherwise dominate it.
York TM9ETM9E080B12MP12
95% AFUE single-stage condensing furnace with a 5-speed standard ECM blower -- York's mid-tier condensing line, one step below the modulating Affinity YP9C flagship (spec-researched this pass but no public price could be found for that exact SKU; see dossier).
Daikin DC96VDC96VC0804CNA
96% AFUE two-stage condensing furnace, Daikin's mid-tier line below the modulating/communicating DM97MC (spec-researched this pass -- 97% AFUE, modulating, Lifetime heat exchanger + 12-year parts -- but no live price could be found for that exact SKU; recorded as NOT FOUND rather than estimated).
What the specifications mean
AFUE (%)
Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency -- the share of fuel energy that becomes usable heat.
95% AFUE means 95 cents of every fuel dollar reaches the house. The jump from 80% to 95% requires condensing operation and PVC venting, which changes installation cost.
Rated capacity (BTU/h)
Nominal heating or cooling output at the standard rating condition.
Sizing matters more than efficiency. An oversized system short-cycles, fails to dehumidify, and wears out early. Always size from a Manual J load calculation.
Compressor / burner staging
How the equipment modulates output: single-stage, two-stage, or fully variable (inverter).
Variable-speed equipment runs long and low instead of blasting on and off. That is what produces even temperatures, quiet operation and real dehumidification -- and it is usually a bigger comfort upgrade than a couple of SEER2 points.
