Our take
The Powerwall 3's real advance over the 2 is the integrated solar inverter, which removes a separate box, a separate conversion loss, and a separate thing to fail. Its 11.5 kW continuous output is the highest per unit here, and that is the specification that decides whether your well pump and heat pump can both start during an outage. The trade-off is architectural: it is one large unit, so a failure takes the whole system down, and it is not readily expandable in small increments.
Best for
Whole-home backup where high instantaneous power matters — well pumps, heat pumps, ranges — and where a new solar array is going in at the same time.
Watch out for
With the 25D credit gone the effective price rose sharply. Tesla's certified installer network varies a lot in quality by region.

Before you buy this
Size on continuous power (kW) for what you actually want backed up during an outage, not just usable capacity (kWh) — a well pump or a heat pump compressor starting can draw far more than its running wattage. List your essential loads and ask whether the proposed inverter can start them together, not just hold them once running. And confirm the quote isn't still claiming the 30% federal credit, which expired for anything placed in service after 31 December 2025.
