Current Rheem/Ruud R-454B 5-ton communicating inverter condenser. Rheem's designated test combination with the RHMVY6021SEACAJ modulating air handler delivers 54,000 BTU/h, 17.5 SEER2 and 10.5 EER2.

Our take

This is the exact premium path behind the inverter question. It can modulate from roughly 40% to 100% of capacity, but its matched RHMVY indoor unit is 208/240V—so preserving the old 115V circuit and getting Rheem's fully modulating system are competing goals.

Best for

Hot-humid houses that value quieter operation, long dehumidifying cycles and steady temperatures enough to justify both the equipment premium and a new 208/240V indoor circuit.

Watch out for

The 5-ton designated combination is 17.5 SEER2/10.5 EER2, below the family's headline 'up to 20/13' ratings. Get a room-by-room Manual J before paying inverter prices to compensate for inherited oversizing.

Compare against

Before you buy this

Ask the contractor for the AHRI certificate number for the specific indoor/outdoor combination being installed — ratings apply to matched pairs, not to the outdoor unit alone. Ask whether they will perform a Manual J load calculation rather than sizing off the equipment being replaced. And check your state and utility incentive programmes: there is no federal tax credit for a 2026 installation, so those programmes are now the only incentive money available, and many require approval before installation.
